This presentation will explore the brain science of belonging, the importance of showing up in spaces feeling as though one belongs (particularly at work), and the physical ramifications of feeling like one doesn’t belong. It’ll explore the concept of Othering and its damaging effects on the important work of DEI. We’ll close out by looking at tools HR and DEI professionals can use to create belonging, prevent othering and build more inclusive spaces.

Macie Peterman is a graduate of Columbia College with degrees in Criminal Justice Administration and Human Services. She is the Director of Inclusion and Engagement at Shelter Insurance. She’s been with Shelter for 6 years and enjoys supporting Shelter’s employees and creating inclusive spaces. Macie is an NCCJ Certified Facilitrainer and has her Certified Diversity Professional designation from the Society for Diversity. Outside of the workplace, Macie is a mother of two amazing kids and spends much of her time on the benches at her kids sporting events, utilizing the opportunity to catch up on some free reading that she enjoys!
